Set against the backdrop of the late sixties and early seventies, Nancy Mehagian’s delicious memoir tells the tale of a young woman who heeded the siren’s call to a life of freedom and romance

A first-generation Armenian-American whose family narrowly escaped genocide, Nancy Mehagian, the rebellious daughter, left behind the safety and security of suburban life for an unforgettable adventure that would find her establishing the first vegetarian restaurant on the Spanish island of Ibiza, having an affair with a Bedouin gypsy during a stint as a cabaret dancer in Syria, and, through a series of mishaps, incarcerated for sixteen months in a London prison (along with her newborn baby), where she managed—even there—to pioneer a healthy way of eating. A breathtaking, sensual, and page-turning chronicle that whisks you along the author’s lifelong path to spiritual enrichment, Siren’s Feast An Edible Odyssey is a story that captures a colorful era and features over forty recipes as delectable as the journey itself.

Some of the recipes are good, but there is just so much extra stuff about the author's romantic life, drug usage, and general bad behavior. I was expecting a little more background on the Armenian aspect, not the freedom of the 1960s and 1970s.

Siren Feast An Edible Odyssey edition by Nancy Mehagian Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This is one of my MOST favorite books! I couldn't put it down! I didn't want it to end and when it did I was left wanting more! This is a great read and a PERFECT gift for a friend. And if you love food, cooking or eating - this is a must buy since it is filled with delicious recipes. I hope there is a sequel soon!
The center of Nancy Mehagian's fun and sexy food memoir is a surprise this is actually a story about the power of living with an open heart.

The writer effortlessly whisks the reader up into her exotic travels with a promise of delicious dishes and spicy stories. This book is not the remembrances of an older woman yearning with nostalgia for better days but the fresh hope that comes with youth. I wanted to know where Nancy was headed next; I feared what would happen to her free-spirited self, and finally when it did happen, I trusted that she would see it through to the end. With grit and good recipes. The writing style is clear and concise and her voice strong and direct.

From sensuality and cooking in Ibiza, to traveling through Morocco and finally growing up in motherhood in a London prison...the only desire this reader had upon closing the book is that perhaps it might have been better served over many nights with wine and dancing and laughter...to highlight the best parts into longer stories.

That said, Nancy Mehagian has managed to pack more life into the first half of her life than almost anyone around..the lessons she learned that turned her into the person she is today make this a completely satisfying memoir. I wait with anticipation for her second volume...
Mediocre writing and sometimes meandering. It did contain some great Armenian recipes. I've already made the green beans and they came out great. Look forward to making more of the recipes.
Siren's Feast is the first memoir I have ever read and I just loved being taken on such an exotic, sometimes mildly erotic, and - above all - sensual journey. It certainly is a 'feast' of scintillating and exciting adventures, all charted with some of the best and easy-to-assemble recipes I have come across (and I cook A LOT!)

Side Note I gave copies of this wonderful book to my two (grown) sisters and my mother, and they ALL loved it! That was one successful Christmas, presents-wise LOL!

As a child born in the sixties, I was still young as the hippy 'flower power' movement was on the wane, so for me it's exciting to read the experiences of a woman who was there while she was young and beautiful (!), who encountered so many interesting people and had so many astonishing experiences -- good and bad.

My favourite part is when the author makes an ill-prepared pilgrimage to a famous holy cave in India that she had read about in "Autobiography of a Yogi" (also on my 'books-to-read' list). The author describes her drug-free yet psychedelic and life-changing experience in the cave so vividly it's as if you were there, too. Then the people she encounters almost immediately afterwards really bring her back down to earth. I just love how honest she is about it all. I especially loved her strong reliance on intuition. She doesn't go on about it, but it really underpins her decisions, and you see that when she doesn't heed her intuition, things take a turn for the worse. So, listen up, ladies! Your feminine intuition is a powerful force indeed!

I loved that the author presents the pleasant and the unpleasant with equal weight. She never over-dramatises some fairly extreme experiences, yet sometimes she does seem to gloss over certain episodes... I wouldn't have minded a bit more emotional depth, yet this remains an extremely satisfying and well-worth-it read.

I hope Nancy Mehagian writes a follow-up, because when the book ends, I really wanted to find out what happened next, especially as she embarked upon a career as a healer. Just wow!

NB -- this is the review I posted shortly after I read the paperback version, but I am sure the version has the same content LOL!

This is a really fantastic memoir (foodoir). I'm just about to read it again just so I can return to & share this insightful journey.
Set primarily against the backdrop of the turbulent Sixties and early Seventies, Siren's Feast, An Edible Odyssey, is a memoir. In it Nancy Mehagian tells the tale of a rebellious daughter who foregoes the safety and security of suburban American life and sets off on an adventure that leads her to some of the remote outposts of the world.

As a first generation Armenian-American, whose family narrowly survived a genocide, the constant that remains with Mehagian is a passion for food and cooking-the remembered flavors of home, tradition and lives long forgotten.

During her seven year odyssey, Mehagian encounters mystery and magic in Morocco, has a romantic idyll on the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, establishes the first vegetarian restaurant on the island of Ibiza in Spain (today the party capital of the world), journeys to the East in search of love and enlightenment in the Himalayas and, during a stint as a cabaret dancer in Aleppo, Syria, falls in love with a Bedouin gypsy, resulting in the birth of a daughter.

A series of mishaps leads Mehagian to a sixteen-month incarceration, along with her baby, in an infamous London prison, where she manages, even there, to pioneer a new and healthy way of eating.

The journey comes full circle when Mehagian returns home and finds her true purpose and meaningful work through an enigmatic teacher of an ancient healing art and comes to understand the value of family, friends and true spiritual nourishment.

Siren's Feast contains over 40 mouth-watering recipes, representing well-tested originals as well as old family recipes.
